Its a good point, Carl, but its a fair amount of work.
I haven't seen anyone using XL server yet, its early days. At the moment, BF needs to support the long string and other features of Excel 2007. Then, the whole issue of thread safety needs consideration. BF runs in a single thread, and I don't think it would be thread-safe in a server environment. There are lots of issues here about performance and structure. Currently I favour doing a .NET assembly deployable in any app with the minimum of customisation for XL Server. I think a simple wrapper around the XLL might be a bit of a fudge, but I'd be happy to be told otherwise. So in summary I think we need to stay firmly on top of traditional desktop Excel for now and then consider a partial re-write for .NET which would include XL server. |
