SCurve Revisited

Thu 08 Mar 12

One of the most popular functions is SCurve, which is used to spread a cost over the lifetime of a project. The S-Curve that BF uses is the result of pragmatism, rather than theory. It is related to the Cosine curve, which can be configured so it has an S shape, which is then the cumulative cost.

Because the S Curve is so useful, I have written a little paper on it, The Origins of the S Curve in Business Functions. There is also a spreadsheet which shows that the BF calculations match the detailed equations from the cosine curve analysis , How SCurveWorks.xls.

There is also a nice animated illustration here, with the worksheet behind it here.

Be warned, there is a bit of maths in this, notably some calculus, but fear not, it was written not by a mathematician, but by an earth scientist!
